One of the most popular hunting destinations close to Memphis is the Wapanocca National Wildlife Refuge, which is just over the state line into Arkansas. Although its primary purpose is to provide a protected habitat for migratory birds, it also embraces on-grounds hunting as an effective wildlife management tool.
Wapanocca offers designated Refuge permits to qualified gun and bow hunters. To hunt deer with a firearm, however, hunters must acquire an additional quota permit. Deer hunters using a gun can only employ legal pistols, shotguns with slugs, and muzzleloaders to take home a single buck or doe. Bag limits for other animals are generally the same as Arkansas state limits. Popular quarry species in Wapanocca range from rabbit and squirrel to opossum and feral hog.
